About Oriental Medicine

Oriental Medicine focuses on recognizing imbalances in the body, mind, and spirit. Understanding these aspects are very connected, the practitioner works to restore balance. The diagnostic systems of Oriental medicine are unique, taking into account factors that are often overlooked in traditional Western medicine. The act of creating balance helps to restore proper function to the body while relieving physical and emotional pain and disease. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) dates back over 3,000 years and is the world's oldest continuously practiced professional medicine. It currently provides primary care to one-third of the world's population. TCM mainly utilizes acupuncture and herbal medicine to restore balance and health. However, dietary supplementation, therapeutic exercises, and moxibustion are typical adjunctive therapies. The fundamental principles of acupuncture are to treat the person as an integrated whole in body, mind, and spirit, and to remedy the root cause of illness and disease, not only the symptoms. The use of acupuncture and the herbal aspects of Chinese medicine allow us to treat the body on a molecular and energetic level, restoring the natural flow of health.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture regulates and controls the endocrine and immune systems, releasing hormones and immune competent factors. These reactions assist cells, tissues, and organs to rebuild homeostasis. It also acts on the central nervous system to release neurotransmitters, which affect emotion and pain responses. Dramatic changes in health and energy level and substantial pain reduction can be achieved through the stimulation of specific acupuncture points.Acupuncture promotes the movement of Qi (pronounced chee) in the body. Qi is the revitalizing energy that circulates along channels, to all organs of the body enabling them to function. Qi is what animates you; it gives you vitality and shows itself as a sparkle in your eyes. When the Qi in the body is abundant and flowing freely, the body and mind are healthy. When your Qi becomes obstructed or deficient, the body becomes distressed and symptoms of sickness begin to appear.Dramatic changes in health and energy level and substantial pain reduction can be achieved through the stimulation of specific acupuncture points. The release and redirection of blocked energy restores balance and wellbeing.

Formulas are tailored to address not only your main symptom, but also the underlying pattern. An in depth interview is used to determine the pattern of disharmony. At Avalon Acupuncture our greatest concern lies with your safety and health. We are happy to address any concerns you may have about taking herbal prescriptions while on pharmaceutical drugs. In some cases herbs may offer fewer side effects than their pharmaceutical counterparts. In other situations herbs should not be substituted or combined with pharmaceuticals. Taking Chinese herbal medicine is a great way to speed recovery and to treat complicated or chronic conditions bringing the body back to a state of balance. Formulas may be taken for a few days or several months depending on your condition.

Practitioner AcupuncturistMichelle McCray has had a lifelong interest in science, medicine, and the healing arts. She has a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College as well as a B.S. in Chemistry from Metropolitan State College of Denver. Michelle strongly values the contributions of both Eastern and Western medicinal systems. She is certified as a Diplomate in Oriental Medicine by the NCCAOM, including certification in Acupuncture, Clean Needle Technique, and Chinese Herbology.

Acupuncture is most well known for resolving acute and chronic pain conditions. Michelle employs a gentle technique, adjusting her approach to fit your needs. Her training includes adjunctive therapies such as moxibustion, electrical stimulation, tui na, shiatsu, acupressure, cupping, auriculotherapy, dietary and lifestyle recommendations. At Avalon Acupuncture disposable needles are always used and acutonics® treatments are offered as a gentle alternative or addition to your treatments.

Michelle is passionate about working with women, specializing in issues ranging from puberty to menopause. She also has extensive experience working with emotional health issues and giving support to oncology patients.

Also at this location Elizabeth Milliken is available for massage working with modalities such as: Reiki energy healing, trigger point therapy, Swedish massage, cranial sacral, deep tissue massage, and shiatsu.
